The Video Platform Provides Viewers Power to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a fresh option that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 billion AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a full-scale release. This development coincides with a rise in content created by AI, driven by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. In total, more than 100 mn media items are added to the app each day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI content they view by opening the “manage topic” option in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the setting cover current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies mandate creators to tag “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the platform will now attach an “AI-made” tag to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for identifying artificial media. This measure is aimed to deter users from attempting to bypass the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will assist educational bodies dedicated to training computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, following debate over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in Britain. The company is planning to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by removing the most harmful content ahead of it has to be seen by people. TikTok announced a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
