Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
