British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
